CNY berbeda dari yuan luar negeri, atau CNH, yang tidak dikontrol seketat yuan dalam negeri.

Setiap pagi, Bank Rakyat Tiongkok (People’s Bank of China/PBOC) menetapkan apa yang disebut titik tengah harian, berdasarkan level penutupan hari sebelumnya yuan dan harga yang diambil dari dealer antar bank.
